Join us for a Crew Overboard Certification Sail on Golden Bear and take the opportunity to earn or refresh an essential sailing safety certification. This training sail is designed for volunteers who need Crew Overboard (COB) certification as part of their volunteer qualifications. Participants will receive hands-on instruction and practical experience in recognizing, responding to, and recovering a person in the water under realistic sailing conditions. Whether you are seeking initial certification or looking to sharpen your skills, this is an excellent opportunity to build confidence, improve safety awareness, and strengthen your seamanship. Come get certified, practice a critical lifesaving skill, and join fellow volunteers for a valuable day on the water.
We did small boat practice at our last class when had engine trouble with Benjamin so this class will be standard hand, reef, steer review plus knot work and anchoring drill.
Our maintainance course for this Fifth Contra Costa Probation sail. Ideally both Aleta and Benjamin available as we show them basic engine maintainance (oil check and change, fuel filters, etc.) and rigging check. After an hour or two of that, short sails on the Bay reviewing hand, reef and steer.
Our graduation party and ceremony for the students. Families invited, pot luck, kayak races and contests, a short sail where the students show what they have learned. Graduation diplomas handed out, ideally the Chief and other VIPS attending. A very moving event in the past...invite all you can to show our support of these students.
We are ALWAYS done by 8 PM. All meetings are conducted solely via Zoom. You must register in order to access the meeting via Zoom. A registration button is in the event details on the volunteer.bluewaterfoundation.org site when you are logged in. Use it to register. Registration will generate connection details which are good for subsequent meetings.
Our sixth class with the students of Contra Costa Probation and this class will review hand, reef and steer, fly the genniker if light wind, and learn the basics of navigation. We pull out the charts, plan a course, and seek to execute. Other students will work the radar and GPS systems. Pizza at the dock when return.
Certification sail on Benjamin Walters including live crew overboard drill. Bring lunch and we go rain or shine.
This will be a class on Aleta to expose the students to the world of racing. Ideally we will have another boat to race with Aleta and we will train in a relatively relaxed atmosphere to see if the students are interested in expanding into a racing program. Racers wanted and welcome IF will not take so seriously that the mentor mentte relationship is harmed....

Come help teach and inspire the women’s sailing community at the annual Women’s Sailing Seminar! The boat will primarily be crewed by the women from the seminar but we need a 2-3 BWF certified crew who are familiar with the boat to help teach and oversee safety on both Saturday and Sunday. Meals are provided and you’re welcome to attend the dinners and speaker events that are part of the seminar.
The location for this sail is ALAMEDA (site defaults to Berkeley since boat selected is Aleta)
If we are unable to fully staff this with women volunteers, we’ll welcome male volunteers to join.
Our night sail with the students of Contra Costa Probation. A relatively relaxed sail to see the sunset and the lights, reviewing navigation lights and buoys on the way. If enough people interested, may take Aleta out as well. Dinner at dock, then out to the stars. Make sure you have a light on your coat or floatation gear.
