The Blue Water Foundation gives inner city and at-risk students the opportunity to experience sailing. The Foundation works in conjunction with San Francisco School District and the San Francisco Police Department to take groups of kids out on the San Francisco Bay and surrounding ocean.

Through our programs, children get the chance to discover the art of sailing, experience success through team work, and even conquer the challenges of the maintenance and repair of sailboats.

Blue Water is an IRS-approved 501C3 non-profit California corporation and is composed entirely of unpaid volunteers from all parts of the Bay Area Community.

The Foundation owns boats ranging from 20' day sailors to the 46' famous open-ocean racer, GOLDEN BEAR and also uses volunteers' boats. We have taken middle school and high school students sailing from virtually every public school in San Francisco. The Foundation also works with youth groups, including such organizations as the River of Words (children poets), Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bay Area, the YMCA, Crissy Field Center, San Francisco Boys and Girls Clubs, Project Avary and other youth selected by the San Francisco Police Department.

Since its inception in 1992, over 9000 youth have participated in the program, and some of the students, once graduated from high school, have become Blue Water Foundation volunteer sailors.

We are always looking for volunteers who care about children and understand how the sea can be a mentor as well as a challenge.

Blue Water has been publicly commended by both the former Mayor Wille Brown and the Chief of Police of San Francisco and is considered a model program of its kind in the United States.
